Most people think of nutrition as what to eat when to eat it, and how much to eat. Functional nutrition is quite different. It is evaluating how the bodily systems work and how you can support that nutritionally, taking into consideration your bio-individuality. In Functional Nutrition we have a mantra: “We are all unique, everything is connected, and all things matter.” (Andrea Nakayama, Full Body Systems Alliance.)
We use functional nutrition to figure out what truly is going on in there. You may have a diagnosis, multiple diseases, or a series of unexplained symptoms or explained symptoms that are still not resolving. You may feel like you're going around in circles with health practitioners and medications and tests with no true answers on how to feel better. This is where functional nutrition counseling comes in.
Functional Nutrition Counseling does not take the place of your medical team, but can instead become a critical part of your team, creating a larger and deeper story for your practitioners to hone in on diagnoses or treatments or even select medications changes or to wean if your functional matrix story warrants it.
A Functional Nutrition Counselor does not diagnose or treat. The main role is to uncover the clues, make the connections in your bodily systems across various systems, and coach you on how to best support your specific bodily systems and functions nutritionally, with foods and sometimes supplements when your body displays insufficiency, and fill the gap in your medical team. Recommendations can be made to health practitioners that work holistically, integrative, and functionally to increase the strength of your medical team.
